Experience with Conducting Research Interviews

I don’t really have that much experience with conducting research interviews. I only experienced this during my sophomore year in high school. We had to write a lengthy paper on a career we were interested and interview three people in the field. I chose Marketing for my paper and since my dad was in that business, I had connections to interview his friends. Some of the interviews I had to do were over e-mail due to their busy work schedule, but was glad they took the time to answer my questions. I felt comfortable during the interview because I have met them throughout the years I was growing up. What went well was that they were very resourceful and responsive. If I haven’t had met them before, what I would need to improve would be to be calm and outgoing to an interviewee who’s a complete stranger to me. Hope that's helpful!

  1. Hi Kai, you are pretty lucky to have connections with your dad's friends that are in a fascinating business such as marketing. Interviews through e-mails sound a bit complicated, but I am sure that if you prepared an appropriate and organized questionnaire, the interview went great. I am glad that you know your dad's coworkers on a bit of a personal level. That certainly makes the interview process less nerve wrecking and awkward. I am sure that you received excellent information that was beneficial to your speech because of the connection that you already had with them. That seems like a good experience you had with doing interviews. :) I am sure that you will do an excellent job on interviewing complete strangers!

  2. I remember when I had to do interviews for my career plan for bus10 class. It was hard to find people to interview so I even went online and looked for random business people to interview. I found this one guy who had been an accountant for years and e-mailed him. He asked for the interview questions but he never answered them. He took forever to respond and by the time he did my paper was due two weeks ago. Luckily I was able to ask my friend’s friend’s dad for an interview and this other woman. Getting information wasn’t hard but finding people to interview was.

  3. Hello!

My school had to do the same thing and I also had hook-ups as well. I found that knowing the people who I was interviewing helped me a lot in the long run. I think that you gave good advice to the others in this class. Being calm and outgoing while doing an interview makes the whole process ten times easier. Another thing that I would suggest is that you should actually research the topic before the interview. When I went into my interviews, I didn't know much about the topic so I found it difficult to have an actual conversation with the interviewee's. I feel that knowing the subject you are interviewing about makes the whole process less nerve-racking.

  4. Good evening Kai! :)
If you don't mind, can you tell me how you pronounce your name? Is it pronounced like k"eye?"
Dude you are so lucky that you already knew the people
that you were interviewing, that's so awesome and it must have been way easier for you to do the research, especially since it was in e-mail. Then again, you did know them too, but still. haha.
I think that because you already knew your dad's co-workers,
they felt that much more comfortable as well in giving you the information that you needed.
I guess that when interviewing a stranger, we have to make
the interviewee feel that much more comfortable as well. I think that they will give us more information and everyone will be happy. :)
