Chapter 11 Concept
One concept from Chapter 11 that I found useful or interesting was the tips for using presentation media. The key points stated were considering your room and the audience, practice with your media, and speak to your audience, not your media. For considering your room and the audience, you want to be sure the media is displayed at a height and distance that makes it easy visibility for the audience. Remember to avoid turning toward the screen where the images are displayed and face the audience. A speech can go more smoothly if you practice with your media. You are able to learn to integrate them smoothly and it’s helpful to have note cards to remind you when to use your media during the presentation. It helps to arrive early to make sure you have no technological difficulties and keeps you organized and prepared. Takes planning and practice. When you speak to your audience remember not to speak to your media. Focus is to remain on the audience and helps keep the audience’s attention.

Hello there Kai!
ReplyDeleteI too felt that the tips for using presentation media was very useful and interesting. You brought very useful tips that we should all consider when we use any of the types of presentation media. For instance, practicing with our media is important & showing up early. I always felt like if I created a powerpoint for a speech.. that it wouldn't work once I showed up for my speech. I always had a fear that my powerpoint wouldn't work & I just wouldn't know what I would do without. So showing up early to class to check if it works is a very useful tip that I will definitely use if I am paranoid. Also speaking to our media is something that we definitely should not do, but we all end up doing it! So good job on bringing that up haha

Hello Kai!
ReplyDeleteI also found these tips useful. During the speeches I noticed that a lot of the presenters looked at and talked towards the projector screen. I know that you aren't supposed to do this while giving a speech because you are supposed to be talking to the audience and giving your focus towards them. I agree when you say that a speech can go more smoothly when you practice with your media. For example, someone who practiced with their media would know where the picture is that they are pointing to and they wouldn't have to look back to their screen to find it. Last thing, arriving early never hurts. Not only do you have some extra time to set up your media, you also have time to take a breather and focus on the task you are about to do.
colie :)
Preparation is extremely important especially with the use of Powerpoint and media such as videos. I agree that a speaker should come in before the day of the speech so that they can make sure there is internet connection and all equipment are working. I also agree that practicing with media is extremely important as well. Working with media presentation is like having a prop in a play; you want to work well with it. I practiced my speech with Powerpoint, but I disregarded my habit of looking at my presentation instead of the audience. Hopefully everyone won't stare at their Powerpoints in the next speech just because they are inanimate and don't have eyes :)
ReplyDeleteFor the second speech many people did the looking back on their slides. It is hard to not look back because the slides don’t look back at you and all the information is in front of you. I’ve noticed how sometimes the presentation isn’t high enough and some of the information and pictures can’t be seen by the people sitting in the back. Sometimes presenters also switch their slides too fast. They click speak and then the pictures changes within like 3 seconds. That’s not enough time to stare at the image and see what the presenter just had said.
ReplyDeleteHello Kai! I think that you picked a good concept out of chapter 11 because it can be helpful in our next speech. As you mentioned, it is important to display the media at a height and distance (as well as volume) that makes it easy for the audience to see or hear. I think that is one of the most essential concepts because there have been many times where I have watched a presentation where the visuals were very hard to be seen by certain sections of the audience which caused confusion. Also I agree that arriving early is a good idea because then you can test out the media to make sure there are no malfunctions in your speech.
ReplyDeleteI also found this section to be helpful as well. In my last speech, I looked a lot at the screen and my note cards. The presentation media is for the audience and not usually for the speaker. It is best to refer to it for a second to make sure you have the right slide and then turn back to the audience immediately. I agree that practicing the speech with the slides are important as well. I think it will look more professional but less distracting for the audience so that they can focus on the information that is being given. Before learning about media presentation I did not consider it being at a specific height or distance but I think those things are very important, small details make a difference.
