Chapter 5 Concept

One concept I found most useful or interesting in Chapter 5 is Developing Credibility with Your Audience. In the book, it shows a diagram, Figure 5.2, that shows what surrounds the speakers credibility such as competence, trustworthiness, dynamism, and sociability.

For competence, when the speaker is talking about a particular topic, they obviously need qualifications for that topic. The audience never wants to be mislead or lied to, that's why trustworthiness is very important during a speech. The audience perceives the speaker to be honest with them along with being sensitive, ethical, and reliable. Dynamism percepts to the audience the speaker's activity level, which meaning appearing confident and fluent by how they speak and give their ideas. Sociability is another importance of credibility. The audience has to be able to connect with the speaker, so the speaker needs to be friendly and responsive. These four qualities to credibility well help any ones speech to start off strong and end strong.

  1. Hello Kai! You brought up a good point here - credibility! In what ways have you observed credibility through the speeches and clips we have watched throughout the semester so far? How will you incorporate credibility into your speech? What types of things will you do to convey credibility at the start of your speech, and of course throughout? :)

  2. Hey Kai, I found that chart to be pretty helpful too. It's almost like a memorable chart that attaches to everyone that gives speeches. Since we're going to all give our speeches, it's like people are definitely going to trust the information that each of us present. The audience is not going to pay attention to our speeches, and it’s not a good thing if we begin to give fake facts. We don’t want our audience to have any doubt in us. Overall we are the expert of our own speech. We can’t mislead our audience to believing something false. Credibility is pretty important to consider.

  3. Hey Kai,

In addition to your great points in your post, I also believe that referencing your sources also supplies to your credibility as it proves that you have done the research. Also, referencing them would prove that you aren't taking credit for everything that you have stated being that many people do research over time.

I never thought about the credibility in all honesty because I always delivered speeches to a classroom, which never expected anything else. "Sociability is another importance of credibility." Good point, I think when a speaker can successfully convey his or her message to the audience and the audience is able to reply, it shows an established connection between the two.

Kai, I'm sure with your knowledge about the speeches and what are required of them, you'll do great on your speech!
